Well have you seen Into The Wild? Sounds like you are wanting to end up like Christopher McCandless AKA Alex Supertramp and starve to death in a bus in the cold, Imagine spraining your ankle 25 miles from anything, if you do and think you could make it you are delusional.

I can understand the desire to be alone, but to do it as you are saying with little to no experience on long journeys in the wilderness it is foolish at best.

Just make sure you have a good life insurance policy just in case something happens and no one can find you. At least the rest of your family will be taken care of.

What I said doesn't interfere with your vision quest, it's just common sense. I've been there before and you need the vitamins at the least. You won't get everything you need nutritionally while you are out there I can gaurantee that. The transponder is only there as your last lifeline. It only broadcasts when you activate it so that doesn't interfere with your quest either. Telling the park ranger is just another safety measure that you can take for in the event of the worse case happening. Plus it's common courtesy to the rangers who will be searching for you.

I won't beat the cell phone issue into the ground, as it seems your choice is already made.

I will advise to ascend slowly, and take it VERY easy the first couple days. Altitude sickness can be very real and exhausting, even at elevations no higher than the town of Leadville. I think 9 miles per day sustained for two weeks is a bit ambitious unless you frequent high elevations. Even someone who treks religiously, but never leaves OK, can easily be overcome with the change in altitude.

Any thoughts about hiking Talihina to Petit Jean State Park instead?

Sounds awesome! Only problem might be, this time of year, an early blizzard - you'd better make sure you have a GPS phone and plenty of cold weather gear, and some cold weather knowledge to go with! Good luck - I wish you enlightenment on your vision quest. I'm bugging out of the city rat race life for good, but not for another 5-8 years....

I had some of this going on a few years ago. I finally got tired of the constant neediness and told them all to piss off. My real friends stuck, and the rest got mad and still don't bother me. A permanent fix. I think you will find out they will still be needy when you return.

And take the comm equipment. It is the logical thing to do.

I said that I was no expert. I never said I have little or no experience.
I am not some citified sissy boy who wants to drive my beamer into the woods and pet a bear.
I was born on a farm in ramona oklahoma in 1962, I've been trekin' around the woods armed and dangerous since I was 10 years old, I was army recon, I've had survival training, I've ate things most people would'nt hold in their hand, exactly one year ago I hiked the inca trail to the top of maccu picchu in peru.
For an inexpierienced hobby hiker to take on a trip like this would be suicide, but I think I am at a point in my life that I can and need to do this.
I've led a life of adventure and I am trying to keep that from slipping away or die trying

When did you leave the Ramona area? I'm 3rd generation Ochelata/Ramona.
